AUSLAN CLUB
Auslan (Australian sign language) is the language of the Australian Deaf community.
Auslan Club offers a fun and exciting introduction to Sign Language and diverse culture of the deaf and hard of hearing. By means of games, visual media, and presenters, Auslan Club affords a great occasion for ones to boost their self-confidence, become more self-expressive and develop their skills in communication. It's also a great opportunity for ones to enjoy the vast inclusivity of MNSHS, providing a pathway for particpants to engage with their fellow deaf students and staff.
DANCE TROUPE AND CHEER SQUAD
Mackay North State High School's award-winning dance troupe and cheer squad have been very successful since their inception in 2016.
The dance troupe is otherwise known as the "North High Crew" and the cheer squad the "Fire Crackers". Both groups compete in All Star style competitions.
Some of the accolades these two teams have won include; Highest Scoring & Contemporary Routine of the Competition, Highest Scoring Scholastic Dance Routine of the Competition and Highest Scoring Level 1 routine of the Competition among many other places.
The cheer squad trains before school on a Tuesday morning from 7:15am - 8:15am and also Tuesday 1st breaks in our school hall.
The dance troupe has routines including; Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical, Hip-Hop and Pom. The dance troupe trains 1st breaks in our school hall.
ZONTA CLUB
Z Club offers our students a very worthwhile extra-curricular interest at Mackay North State High School.
By raising awareness of a range of issues related to women both locally and internationally, members develop communication and leadership skills, participate more fully in their community and increase awareness of human rights concerns.
Members plan, organise and participate in activities that give them hands-on experiences to improve the lives of others locally and internationally, e.g. through raffles and fundraising activities of which the proceeds are then donated back into the community.
Z Club is sponsored by the Zonta Club of Mackay and welcomes new members, girls and boys, to our weekly meetings.
F1 IN SCHOOLS
The world's largest Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) competition
The F1 in Schools™ Technology Challenge is the world's largest secondary school technology school technology program. It involves over nine million students from 17,000 schools in 31 nations.
Each year the program engages more than 40,000 high school students in Australia and delivers industry - standard technology into schools which is made available to a further 300,000 students outside the program.
Students as young as 10 are designing, testing and making miniature F1™ cars capable of 80km/h. But it is not about fast cars. F1 in Schools™ is a holistic action learning program which focuses on developing long term employability skills. Students learn leadership, team building, project management, business planning, public speaking, marketing, collaboration, writing and presenting skills.
Many students engaged in this program have been offered employment by industry before completing their studies - others are pursued by universities with competing scholarships - and one has even been head hunted into the real world of Formula1™ racing as an aerodynamics engineer.
Practical, flexible and integrated
The students collaborate with many organisations, industry and higher education facilities to source knowledge and resources during their project. It also provides a platform for mentoring of students. In doing so, they provide tremendous return on investment and education outcomes for all parties. Both metropolitan and rural schools are linked to encourage ongoing collaboration between country and urban students. The students develop a confidence that they have skills and understanding of technology to allow them to continue to live where they like (city or country), following their chosen careers. The program facilitates city and country students how to collaborate over distance in business, empowering them to deal with people anywhere in the world.
NORTH HIGH F1 PROGRAM
Mackay North State High School runs the F1 Program both as a curriculum project with the Industrial Technology & Engineering subject in year 9 as well as an extra-curricular program held on Wednesday afternoons and Monday lunchtimes.

ECO GROUP
Last year Mackay North State High School's eco group focused on Mangroves. Students learnt why they are key eco system and how we can monitor their health and help reduce impacts to them.
Students connected with community members to collected citizen science data for a scientist to use to help monitor and protect local systems.
This year the eco group will continue to collect data in local mangrove sites but will also decide on a school based project.
Reef Guardian School
Mackay North is a Reef Guardian school and in 2024 we want our students to become active in this space. There will be several activities happening throughout the year for students to join in. This will include Action Pledges, Coastal and Beach Clean-up Days, Eco-Challenge, Eye on the Reef, Poster-making competitions. This is not a club but a whole school commitment that all students can participate in.
