For Year 12 student Brandon Greinke, photography is about more than capturing a great image — it is about giving people moments they can look back on.

“I find purpose in being able to take photographs that capture memories for others," Brandon said.

His passion began in junior high school, when he started using his mobile phone to photograph his cat and sunsets.

Wanting better equipment, Brandon asked his mum for a camera and received a Canon EOS 600D for his 16th birthday last year.

Since then, his camera has rarely left his side.

“I bring my camera everywhere, and it's gone great, with people now requesting me to take pictures," he said.

Despite describing himself as shy, Brandon said he had not felt nervous taking photographs in front of his peers. His advice for other students hesitant to pursue their passion is simple.

“Just do it," he said.

“I don't like to openly express myself much, but if I'm passionate about something, I will just do it."

Photography has also helped Brandon develop his confidence, communication and networking skills.

He practises every day and uses YouTube to teach himself about camera settings and the exposure triangle.

A recently acquired 50mm prime lens — commonly known as the “nifty fifty" — is also helping him develop his own style, particularly in portraiture with blurred, or bokeh-style, backgrounds.

Brandon hopes to turn his passion into a paid hobby and has already landed his first job photographing a 16th birthday party.

“It's pretty thrilling," he said.

At school, Brandon studies Film, Television and New Media, Social and Community Studies, and Sport and Recreation. He has completed a Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement and is working towards a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.

After Year 12, Brandon hopes to become a police officer and is building his fitness in preparation for the recruitment process.

Whatever direction he takes, Brandon plans to keep capturing the moments that matter.
